A Day In Photographs

 I'm doing things a bit differently today. We had quite a lot of wildlife activity on what was a wet and windy day. The highlight was probably an appearance by a stoat that chased a red squirrel! We also saw the female sparrowhawk several times, had a couple of kestrels perching on the power line over the bottom field, and saw a splendid rainbow. I have also included a clip of a fox last night and an image of an itchy squirrel!







We also had a visit from a flock of long tailed tits.
The weather continues cold with a dusting of fresh snow on the hills this morning but at least the wind has abated and the flooding is subsiding.

 I was in the Sunbiggin Tarn area yesterday and saw a flock of about 150 teal. These little dabbling ducks appear to change colour as they bank in flight to show first their topside and then their underside. The distinctive green wing flashes are diagnostic. Cormorant

 We are some distance from the sea here - at least 30 miles as the crow flies. Despite this we often see cormorants which are normally thought of as coastal birds. This is because cormorants have followed the River Eden some 80 miles from the Solway Firth and made the river their home. Cormorants are very similar to  the smaller shag  but shags stay along the coast and don't come up the river. You will see that the bird sits very low in the water and has a beak adapted for fishing. Cormorants dive to fish and swim with powerful legs and assist motion with their short wings. The bird in my photograph is a breeding bird as can be told from the white cheek patches which are absent in non breeding birds. The birds spend a lot of their time preening and keeping their feathers in good condition and can often be seen on a perch with their wings outstretched so that the feathers can dry off after a dive. Bogbean

 On my regular trip to Tarn Sike reserve this week I noticed that the white flowers of the bogbean were prominent. These plants occupy bogs and fens and have the most beautiful flowers at this time of the year. The plants get their name because the leaves are meant to resemble those of the broad bean. This plant has been used as a herbal remedy for arthritis, and for scurvy.  It was also used as an alternative to hops for flavouring beer. The chemicals in these plants are said to attract cats (in the same way as catnip does). Diary A warmer day with sunshine. I walked my regular butterfly transect yesterday at Waitby Greenriggs reserve . Only 22 butterflies with the usual species for the most part. I found a small heath butterfly and a couple of dingy skippers which were the only things of note. I did spot a large and dark coloured stoat whilst I was there and it must surely have been a male it was so big. We had a redstart visit the garden which is not usual. Last nights moth...
