Return of the Stoat

For the last couple of years we have been visited by stoats at this time of the year. We usually see a female - and like all females she is probably pregnant (I have dealt with stoat sex elsewhere - an interesting topic!). In the last two years the female has given birth in a den in our stone walls and we have seen her with young at several stages of development.

I am showing photos that I took yesterday - they don't improve on ones I have already posted last year but it is a record of this individual. At one stage the stoat chased a squirrel up a tree. The stoats match the squirrels for speed on the flat but once in a tree the squirrels are safe. We also saw the stoat doing its little "dance'. This is thought to be caused by parasites in the brain.

Diary
Overnight cameras - one polecat - several wood mice - and a load of rabbits. Some flocks of common gull about, and we had nuthatches and collared dove in the garden.
I meant to talk about this yesterday when I was posting about bird song. By far the best way to start the day is to listen to BBC radio 4 at 0555 hrs for "Tweet of the Day" when you are treated to some birdsong and some 'backstory " about the bird. These articles are available in a slightly extended form (5 mins each) via the ""BBC Sounds App. Highly recommended!
