Around the House and Orchards

The next bit in a discussion of the various habitat on our land. This time its the area around the house.

In the drone shot you will see that there is an area of walled flower garden immediately next to the house. There are a couple of copses either side of the house of conifers (mostly Norway spruce and Scots pine). We also have around 20 apple trees - some pear - damsons - quince - hazel blackcurrants raspberries etc. The hedgerows are over run by rabbits. The stone walls are much used by stoats. Bats (pipistrelles) roost in the house and in the nearby trees ( I have a bat box too). There are bird feeders outside the house that attract a great variety of birds.

Diary
A flock of several hundred common gull feeding on the damp fields. (Its been raining pretty solidly for several days). The Sike is running bank full. Camera traps revealed a fox and a nice image of a roe buck. This buck is starting to show "bumps" on its head as next years antlers are starting to grow.

From time to time we have a visit from "the Frerret man" who we allow to hunt rabbits using his ferrets. It seems like an environmentally friendly way of keeping the rabbit population in check. Here is a photo of the male ferret (called a "Hob" as opposed to the female "Jill") with some visiting grandchildren looking suitably impressed.

Here for comparison are some domesticated polecats - note the bandit faces.
And here are a couple of the rabbits they accounted for. One of them is a rare "blue " coloured rabbit.

During the hiatus caused by the hunting a wild stoat took the opportunity to kill rabbit disturbed by the ferrets. A most unusual occurrence that I sadly have no video of.
