Teal
I was in the Sunbiggin Tarn area yesterday and saw a flock of about 150 teal. These little dabbling ducks appear to change colour as they bank in flight to show first their topside and then their underside. The distinctive green wing flashes are diagnostic.
Diary
A stoat ran across the road in front of my car yesterday on our land. I caught a glimpse of a roe deer in the bog meadow yesterday and then subsequently caught this shot of a roe buck on the trail camera overnight.
There have been reports of a Merlin at Sunbiggin Tarn - I failed to find it but did see this nice kestrel.
That teal photo looks very printable.

DeleteOne of those ones that is better than you expect it to be!
DeleteWonderful photo of the Teal flock. The green flash is far more prominent and extensive on the topside and underside of some of the wings than British Birds shows. Other wings seem to have hardly any flash. Is this a matter of the age of the bird?
ReplyDeleteThere is some natural variation. I often don’t notice the variations until I look at the photos and you are right the juveniles seem different. I read that there are some Baikal teal in the uk that are different again!
