Still not cut the grass!

At the start of Spring we decided to keep a patch of lawn with long grass to benefit insect life. Rather than just let the grass grow we laid a small square of turf that was sown with wildflowers. We were inspired by the “no mow May” project which I talked about on 25th May. Well we still haven’t cut that but of grass. It is still looking good as you can see below.

I must say that I have been surprised by the result and we will probably increase the area next year. It’s. great use of the lawn unless you want to practice your putting. There have been some initiatives along the same lines locally. The local wildlife trust partnered with the road authorities has planted pollinator friendly wildflowers along miles of the A66 road in the Northern Lake District and most of the Local Authorities in the area have reduced the number of times they cut the road verges to allow the wildflowers to flourish. Long May it continue.

Diary

A couple of collared dove in the garden. Several hundred common gull on the next door field that has just been sprayed with slurry and at least 100 rooks joins them.
