Eyebight
A tiny little plant that has survived the cut in the meadow is the eyebright.
It's good to see this plant in a traditional hay meadow as it is semi parasitic upon grasses and so helps to suppress the grass and stop it overtopping the wildflowers.
The name refers to the use of the plant to treat eye infections. This is another example of the medieval "Doctrine of Signatures" rubbish that I have mentioned before. The theory goes that as it looks like a little eye then God is indicating to you that it can be used to treat the eye.
Diary
I walked 8k along the Smardale nature reserve yesterday. Large flocks of gold crest feeding on the seed heads. Lots of butterflies - mostly peacock and red admiral but I did get this photograph of a comma butterfly which is the first time I have seen one this year.
I also noticed that the hazel nuts are developing nicely. Long term followers will recall that I talked about the tiny male and female flowers on hazel early in the spring (7th March) . There are lots for the squirrels to eat now.
The Smardale walk is a great favourite of mine and I thought I would share this photograph of a section of it.
