Meadow Sweet

One of the smells of summer is the faint sweet smell that pervades our meadow on a warm day as the meadow sweet comes into flower. This member of the rose family is common in damp meadows (that's us!).

Meadow sweet has been used to make mead  to drink and was popular as a "grass" to strew on the floor as a scented "carpet" to walk on in the days when there were earthen  or stone floors. It was apparently a favourite of Elizabeth I of England.

Diary
I had a dozen clips of foxes last night who were very busy near the rabbit warrens. I also had clips of roe deer, one doe and one buck several hours apart.

At this time of the year the female usually deposits the fawn in long grass and leaves it there for most of the day - tending to it at dusk - so there is probably a young deer about somewhere. In previous years we have stumbled across them in the long grass of the meadow.
