No Mow May

A UK organisation called Plant Life has launched an initiative this year called "No Mow May". The idea is that people will not mow their lawns in May to allow wild flowers to develop which in turn will be of huge benefit to the invertebrate life (especially pollinators such as bees).

The result of this is that we now have the scruffiest lawn ever! To make matters even more untidy we have laid 4 square metres of wildlife laden turf in the middle of the lawn and protected it with an anti rabbit fence. (the sheep in the background is fibre glass!)

A close up of the 4 square metres in the middle shows the richness of the plant life.

The plan is to start cutting the grass in June but to leave the bit in the middle to flower. It will look a bit odd but will be good for invertebrates.

It's still cold for the time of year. I set a moth trap last night but it rained later on and I caught only two common carpet moths. I don't know what the bats are finding to eat this year.

Overnight cameras caught a glimpse of a fox and over 100 shots of rabbits!
