Drone Fly
Wow ! This is blog number 101 since I started in January. I thought I would run out of things to say but there is still a lot going on - so I'll keep on going!
I came across this wonderful fly this week and saw it walking on the water in a stream. You can see the small depressions in the surface tension that keep it afloat. This fly mimics the honey bee that it superficially resembles. ( lots of advantages - access to honey and predators might think it could sting).
This is a fly not a bee . You should be able to spot that it has only one pair of wings (don't be confused by the shadow of a wing on the surface of the water). The larvae of this fly develop in stagnant water and lie under the water with a long breathing tube or snorkel that allows them to hide. This body shape has led to the larvae being referred to as "rat tailed maggots".
