Water Avens
It seems that every day now that a new Spring flower appears. In a sheltered spot in a quiet lane near us we have seen the first of the water avens come into flower. This flower is locally common and likes areas where the ground is wet. There is a close relative called the wood avens with a yellow flower but it is not so common hereabouts.
I have been out and about at the two Cumbria Wildlife trust reserves that I am involved with. Saw the first white clawed crayfish of the season in the water at Tarn Sike reserve. At Waitby Greenriggs reserve I did my regular butterfly transect. Only 8 butterflies in total ; a Small Tortoiseshell that I have featured before and some Peacock butterflies. Here is a picture of a Peacock butterfly that I took last year.
