Dog Violets
Its gone really cold again. I was supposed to be doing a butterfly transect at the local nature reserve at Waitby Greenriggs but day time temps are well below the threshold of 14 C which is the minimum needed.
I was however delighted to be shown a bank of dog violets just coming into bloom.
These wild violets are almost identical to sweet violets but dog violets have no scent at all. Having very little sense of smell myself I had to contract this work out but I am assured that these are unscented and are therefore dog violets!
We continue to see the female sparrowhawk hunting in the garden several times a day. I also spotted a newt tadpole in the pond.
