Turkey Tail Bracket Fungus

A pile of rotting logs is a wonderful thing! About three years ago a large ash tree blew over in a gale in our bog meadow. I cleared up the worst of the debris and left a stack of part-cut logs to deal with later. The stack is still waiting to be dealt with but in the meantime has grown a crop of very beautiful turkey tail fungus.

Apparently at one time these fungi were much sought after to be used as table decorations at smart dinners. Herbalists  use extracts of this fungus to treat ailments as varied as arthritis, and skin complaints. Other homespun uses include the extraction of dyestuffs and for making paper!

Diary Notes
A cold clear and moonlight night last night combined to make perfect conditions for a valley mist and although my trail cams were triggered I couldn't see a thing on the video clips!
Heard a curlew yesterday for the first time this spring.
