Ive spent a bit of time watching the bird feeders of late. In the cracks and crevices of the wall beneath the feeders live some voles that nip out and eat food that the birds leave.
I am no vole expert but I reckon that these are bank voles rather than field voles but I am sure that there is somebody out there who will keep me right! Voles have rounder faces and smaller ears and eyes than mice and have much shorter tails.
Voles are an important part of the diet of creatures such as owls and buzzards, and I have no doubt that our resident stoats will go for them as well.
Diary Notes
A dry and frosty day today. We have already seen more birds at the feeders today than we saw yesterday during our "official" bird count!
The camera traps were productive last night. A couple of badgers at different sites and times and a fox. I am sure that the fox can detect the camera from his/her reaction.
